Are you among the folks who decide to kick off summer with a road trip or long camping weekend over Memorial Day weekend? (Although, this year, it looks like it might have to be Blue-Tarp-Camping…)
Then follow these easy tips to stretch your gas mileage. It’s amazing what a few adjustments can do!
1. Adjust your Speed.
Cruising at 60 mph, as opposed to 70 mph, can get you about 5 more miles per gallon. According to www.FuelEconomy.gov, each 5 mph that you drive above 60 mph costs you an extra $0.24 per gallon for gas. And, if the road is open and the weather is good, use cruise control to save up to 14% in gas. (However, don’t use cruise control in bad conditions or heavy traffic.)
2. Be Smooth.
Aggressive driving can increase your gas mileage by a third or more! Avoiding fast accelerations and sudden breaking will help you save about 2 miles per gallon.
3. Unload and Be Aerodynamic! Remove roof racks, carriers and excess weight from your car. This may not happen as you head out for a camping trip – but be sure to ‘streamline’ your car again for its daily use, after you get back. At 60 mph, over half of your fuel and engine power goes to overcoming the resistance of the air! Driving around with excess weight or gear creates unnecessary draft and makes your vehicle less aerodynamic.
4. A little TLC can take you farther.
Small adjustments such as a well-tuned engine, properly inflated tires, and regular oil-changes may not make or break the bank when it comes to saving on gas – but they sure contribute! Fixing a major maintenance problem, such as a faulty oxygen sensor, however, can increase mileage by up to 40%.
Feel free to keep cool, however: Using your AC or creating drag by opening windows does not significantly impact your gas mileage, according to www.edmunds.com.
Have a great Memorial Day weekend!
